Can dogs eat pineapple?

Dogs can eat pineapple, but in moderation. The fruit does not contain toxic or dangerous nutrients for dogs, but you should still monitor your pup for any unusual reactions, such as an upset stomach, especially the first time they eat pineapple. Keep in mind that fruits are high in sugars which can make existing health conditions worse. Always consult your vet before giving your dog a new food especially if they have any dietary sensitivities or medical conditions.

Is pineapple good for dogs?

Pineapple is packed with various vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and iron. However, dogs will get these nutrients and many more from a specially-formulated dog food. There is no nutritional need to add pineapple to your dog’s diet, but if you choose to do so, keep in mind that this is a fruit that’s high in natural sugars, so only allow pineapple snacks for your dog in moderation.

When is pineapple harmful for dogs?

Although full of nutrients, fruits are also high in sugars such as fructose andsucrose, which means they are not an ideal snacking option for your pet. Too much sugar can lead to diabetes in dogs and weight problems and can exacerbate existing problems.

The general guideline for dog treats is to not exceed more than 10% of their daily calorie intake so if you decide to offer pineapple as a treat, make sure to use small amounts.

Can dogs eat canned pineapple?

While dogs can eat pineapple, the canned version should definitely be avoided. The syrup keeping the pineapple chunks fresh is usually high in sugar and contains additives which can lead to health problems.

Can dogs eat all the parts of a pineapple?

No. The core and the skin of the pineapple are very hard and can quickly become a serious choking hazard for your pet. Make sure to remove those and only offer your dog the flesh part of the fruit, cut into bite-sized chunks. Make sure you dispose of the core in a way your dog can’t get access to it as it can be really tempting.

How should I feed pineapple to my dog?

Pineapple is quite versatile when it comes to preparation and if your dog adores the taste, here are a few ways to turn the fruit into a dog treat. Remember that moderation is key when giving your dog a pineapple snack.

Frozen pineapple

If you’re after a refreshing dog treat for the hot summer months and your dog likes the taste, try mashing some pineapple and freezing it. Allow it to defrost a little so it slightly softens before letting your dog have a nibble – or even put it inside a Kong toy or smear on a licki mat (avoid doing this on a carpeted floor however is it can quickly get messy!).

Fresh pineapple

Always use fresh pineapple (not canned) and ensure you remove the leaves, spiky skin and the hard core. Take the fleshy part out and cut it into small cube shapes. Smaller shape sizes are preferable as it can help with portion control and not be a choking hazard.

Dried pineapple

Dried pineapple is not recommended as a dog treat. Dried fruits usually pack a higher amount of sugar per portion. As the water is removed, the fruit portions become smaller, but the quantity of natural sugar remains the same. This is why it’s incredibly easy to go overboard when it comes to dried pineapple or any other dried fruit. If you do end up offering it as a snack, don’t lose sight of portion control and feed only tiny pieces.

Pineapple is not a toxic food for dogs, but it is not beneficial to add it to your dog’s diet. Remember that your pup will take the nutrients they need from food specifically designed for them and if you’re looking for a dog treat, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Even though pineapple is not dangerous, there are other seemingly harmless fruits and vegetables that can pose a threat to dogs if ingested. Discover our comprehensive list of harmful foods for dogs here.
