Greetings from Remus
My favourite thing about Remus is...
He is an extremely loyal and low maintenance dog. He sounds terrible and ferocious when the doorbell rings but when the door opens all he does is sniff the person and walks away! He loves his crate, his beds, and likes to walk around with blankets on his back. He asks for very little except the occasional walk and pizza crust. He likes to be in the same room as me and sleeps most of the day.
The biggest challenge with Remus is...
Remus was born feral, and pretty shy when I first got him. He was afraid of many things: busy roads, children's voices and objects like trash cans. He gradually got over his fears with exposure and treats. Then, he acquired seasonal allergies that were so bad he was chewing his paw pads off so we had to put him on Apoquel. Although expensive, it worked wonders!
The most surprising thing about owning a Chow Chow & Boxer is...
Remus has other breeds as well that the DNA panel didn't know, but one thing I didn't expect was how much he loved to lie in the sun and hated the cold. This must have been the Boxer in him. He loved to sunbathe until his fur was hot so we had to tell him to come in before he wanted to. He learned "sit pretty" (aka beg) very easily and was very athletic!
What I wish I’d known about Chow Chows & Boxers is...
I've heard that Chows were difficult to train but what I really noticed was how Remus hated being separated from me, especially at the groomer and vets office. He did better with any procedure as long as I was in the room, especially with nail grinding. He did not like being restrained at the vet, but was fine with procedures if handled gently and if staff took their time.
