Say Hi to Star
Lhasa Apso, 16 years old
My favourite thing about Star is...
She loves her cuddles, always has to settle down with her head on your foot although she has a lovely fluffy bed. We also have one of the pups she had five years ago. Every afternoon she will lick her face and wash her eyes. She loves a shower and will stand up on the side of the bath so she can have her belly washed.
The biggest challenge with Star is...
Star being an old lady now has diabetes and she had gone blind. She has arthritis in one of her back legs, she has. Medication for it and an injections once every four weeks. She isn’t keen on dog food anymore so has cooked chicken, rice and fish but she is worth all the time it takes to make sure she is having food she enjoys.
The most surprising thing about owning a Lhasa Apso is...
They are such a lovely breed to own it’s surprising how they love to be dried with the hair dryer after being showered.
What I wish I’d known about Lhasa Apsos is...
Nothing really. We were told by the breeder who was a friend exacting what to expect.
Did you know?
There are legends and myths about this breed – the most romantic involving the flying, white-headed, bone-eating goddess Sako. She nested up in the mountains and each year gave birth to two young – one with wings and one without. The wingless one was an Apso but every year because it couldn’t fly, it fell to its death. After several years, the heartbroken Sako place her wingless baby on her back and flew him to the ground – and so the Apso landed in Tibet.
