Meet Diefenbaker
Staffordshire Bull Terrier, 3 years old
He came from Edinburgh Dog & Cat Home .
My favourite thing about Diefenbaker is...
His is a loving gentle boy who has 6 homes before us as he is deaf and a Staffy. I love his cuddles the most he craves human affection which is testament to his nature after being failed so many times.
The biggest challenge with Diefenbaker is...
He is deaf, so recall is our biggest training challenge. But getting him to trust us as his forever parents is a massive challenge. His shortest time in a home was one night and his longest was 8 weeks so he needs to learn he has us for the duration no matter how many mistakes he thinks he makes and his face is heartbreaking when he thinks he has upset us.
The most surprising thing about owning a Staffordshire Bull Terrier is...
Dief is our third but I guess I was surprised how gently a breed they are. When we saw our first Staffy “‘Lexi", at the shelter I told my husband “THAT is not coming home with me” but he knows dogs and he knew she deserved a chance and now I would not have any other breed … Staffys all the way.
What I wish I’d known about Staffordshire Bull Terriers is...
I wish I had known they were such gentle, playful, loyal dogs before Lexi and therefore ai would have rescued more by now.
Did you know?
Developed originally by James Hinks of Birmingham, this breed was appearing at dog shows as early as 1862. But it wasn’t until the 1930s when it was recognised as being a separate breed from the Bull Terrier, and had a name change to distinguish the two, adding the county name where it had become so popular.
