Say Hello to Toby
Yorkshire Terrier, 5 years old
My favourite thing about Toby is...
So many things; he's so cute it's impossible to stay mad at him, he's got a big personality and is so clever, but he's strong minded. I'm disabled and have various illnesses; Toby and his brother haven't been trained but, they look after me when I'm having a bad day. They are the best companions - whatever happens they are always excited to see us and give cuddles. They love kids and are very social dogs.
The biggest challenge with Toby is...
Toby's strong-minded and can be stubborn and is a very fussy eater. He has small dog syndrome and barks at big dogs! He needs to have a companion as Toby didn't like being an only puppy, so we got his brother from the next litter. Toby was a very difficult puppy, I was in tears at some points. He was our first dog/ puppy and we thought it would be easier but Toby fought against everything! But he's a great dog now.
The most surprising thing about owning a Yorkshire Terrier is...
They really choose one person and stick by you all day; great dogs if you're around lots as they are very social and love company. They are so smart, I'm embarrassed by how often Toby has tricked us into things - I think he's training us! They have very strong characters and are head strong for a small dog.
What I wish I’d known about Yorkshire Terriers is...
Puppies are hard work; do your homework, it's worth it in the end. It takes more than you to bring up a puppy, have puppy sitters you trust so if you need to go away they are going to be safe. It's a learning curve, there is so much you learn, join a group with other owners to get advice.
Did you know?
The Yorkshire Terrier was bred to hunt and kill rats in the coal mines – and so be small enough to fit in a miner’s pocket!
